BL2 vs BL3 Veneers: Which Bleach Shade Looks More Natural?

BL2 vs BL3 veneers: illustration of two dental shade tabs, BL2 brighter and BL3 softer

BL2 and BL3 are the two bleach shades in the middle of the BL scale, and they’re among the most requested veneer colors. Here’s how they differ, how each compares with B1, and how a dentist helps you decide which one will look natural on you.

Short answer: in the BL bleach system used for many ceramic veneers and crowns (Ivoclar’s A–D guide with Bleach shades), BL2 is whiter than BL3. The order runs BL1, BL2, BL3, BL4, from whitest to least white. BL2 gives a clearly bright, “just whitened” look, while BL3 is still whiter than any natural shade, including B1, but tends to read as softer and more conservative. For many people BL3 is the easier shade to make look natural, especially when some untreated teeth stay visible, but there’s no universal rule: skin tone, gum color, the number of veneers and the lab’s translucency all change the result. Your final shade is confirmed in person, with real shade tabs next to your teeth.

Where BL2 and BL3 sit on the shade scale

Natural tooth color is usually described with the 16 shades of the VITA classical guide, from B1 (the lightest) down to darker shades such as C4. Whitening and cosmetic restorations can go lighter than that natural range, so the A–D guide used by many dental labs adds four Bleach shades, BL1 to BL4.

BL2 is the second whitest bleach shade and BL3 the third. Both are lighter than every natural shade. You may find charts online that number the BL shades the other way round, so it’s always worth asking your clinic which shade guide they and their lab use, and looking at the physical tabs rather than relying on a code alone. If you want to know what sits at the very top of the scale, our article on the whitest tooth shade compares BL1, BL4, OM1 and B1.

BL2 vs BL3: the visible difference

On real shade tabs, BL2 and BL3 are neighbors, so the difference is noticeable but not dramatic. What changes is mostly how “whitened” the smile reads at conversation distance:

BL2 veneers

  • Very bright. Most people will notice that the teeth have been whitened or restored.
  • Often chosen by people who want a bright, polished smile without going to the extreme of BL1.
  • Contrast with untreated neighboring teeth is more visible unless those teeth are whitened too.

BL3 veneers

  • Still whiter than any natural shade, but with a slightly warmer, softer look.
  • Often chosen by people who want white teeth that could pass as “naturally very good”.
  • Usually easier to blend with untreated teeth, especially if those teeth have been whitened first.

The step from BL1 to BL2 follows the same logic one shade higher. If you’re also considering the brightest option, see our BL1 vs BL2 veneers guide.

These are general tendencies, not rules. The same shade code can look different depending on the ceramic, its translucency, the thickness of the veneer and the color of the tooth underneath.

BL3 vs B1: how much whiter is BL3?

B1 is the lightest shade on the natural VITA classical scale. BL3 is a bleach shade, so it’s whiter than B1, and BL4 sits between them. On real tabs the jump from B1 to BL3 is visible: B1 tends to read as “very white for a natural tooth”, while BL3 tends to read as “whitened, but still believable”.

That’s why people deciding between a natural look and a brighter one often end up comparing B1, BL4 and BL3. If you’re worried about the lighter end of the bleach range looking artificial, our article on whether BL3 and BL4 veneers can look too white goes through the factors that make a difference.

Which looks more natural?

For most people, BL3 is the more conservative of the two and the one more likely to pass as natural teeth. But “natural” depends on the face as much as on the shade code. These factors usually matter most:

  • Skin tone, lips and gums. A very bright shade can look balanced on one person and stark on another. Our guide on how skin tone should influence your veneer shade explains why.
  • How many teeth are treated. With a full set of upper and lower veneers, there’s less contrast with untreated teeth, so a brighter shade is easier to carry. With only a few front teeth, the veneers have to match the teeth around them.
  • Your untreated teeth. Teeth that won’t get veneers keep their own color. Some patients whiten them first so the veneer shade can be matched to the result. Whitening results vary and can’t be guaranteed.
  • Translucency and texture. A natural-looking veneer has some translucency and surface detail, like enamel. That lab work can matter as much as choosing BL2 or BL3.
  • The look you want. Some people want a bright smile that’s obviously done; others want nobody to notice. Neither is wrong.

Photos online can help you form a preference, but screens and lighting change how white teeth look. To see the kind of work done at Dr. Yazmín Escudero’s clinic, browse our before and after gallery, and keep in mind that every result depends on the individual case.

How the shade is chosen with your dentist

Choosing between BL2 and BL3 is part of the treatment planning, not something to settle from a chart alone. In general, the process looks like this:

  • Shade tabs in good light. Your dentist holds the real BL2 and BL3 tabs next to your teeth and face, ideally in natural light.
  • Checking your other teeth. If some teeth won’t be treated, the dentist plans how the new shade will blend with them.
  • A trial smile when possible. A temporary mock-up lets you see the shape and brightness on your own face before the final veneers are made.
  • Clear notes for the lab. The dentist and lab need to use the same shade guide, so the code you approve is the color you get.

Porcelain veneers usually involve preparing the tooth surface, so the shade is a long-term decision that’s worth taking slowly. To learn how the clinic in El Poblado, Medellín plans veneer treatment for international patients, visit our porcelain veneers in Colombia page.

Key takeaways

  • In the BL system, BL2 is whiter than BL3. The order is BL1, BL2, BL3, BL4.
  • Both BL2 and BL3 are whiter than B1, the lightest natural shade.
  • BL2 reads as bright and clearly whitened; BL3 reads as white but softer and more conservative.
  • Which looks more natural depends on your skin tone, your untreated teeth, the number of veneers and the lab’s work.
  • The final shade is confirmed in person, with real tabs and ideally a trial smile.

Frequently asked questions

Which is whiter, BL2 or BL3?

BL2 is whiter. In the BL bleach system used for many ceramic veneers and crowns, the order from whitest to least white is BL1, BL2, BL3, BL4. Some online charts number the shades differently, so ask your clinic which shade guide they and their lab use.

BL2 vs BL3 veneers: which looks more natural?

For most people BL3 is the more conservative shade and more likely to pass as natural teeth, while BL2 reads as clearly whitened. It still depends on your skin tone, gum color, how many teeth are treated and the translucency of the ceramic, so the choice is made with real shade tabs next to your teeth.

Is BL3 whiter than B1?

Yes. B1 is the lightest shade on the natural VITA classical scale, and BL3 is a bleach shade, so it’s lighter than B1. BL4 sits between B1 and BL3. The step from B1 to BL3 is visible on real shade tabs.

What does BL3 tooth shade look like?

BL3 is a bleach shade that’s whiter than any natural tooth shade, but softer and slightly warmer-looking than BL1 or BL2. It often gives a white smile that still looks believable, although the same code can look different depending on the material, the lighting and the person.

Are BL3 veneers too white?

Not for most people, since BL3 is one of the more conservative bleach shades. Whether it looks too white for you depends on your skin tone, your untreated teeth and the look you want. A trial smile, when possible, lets you see the brightness on your own face before the final veneers are made.

BL2 vs BL3 teeth: can whitening get my natural teeth there?

It can’t be guaranteed. How much natural teeth lighten with whitening varies from person to person, and many people don’t reach the bleach range. Whitening also doesn’t change the color of existing veneers, crowns or fillings. Veneers let you choose the shade of the treated teeth.

Can I see BL3 veneers pictures before choosing?

Photos can help you form a preference, but screens and lighting change how white teeth look, so a picture isn’t a reliable way to pick a shade. Seeing the physical BL2 and BL3 tabs next to your teeth, and a trial smile if possible, gives a much more accurate idea of the result.
